Nihue Rao has helped many of us emerge from deep challenges in our lives. With COVID and the closure of Peru’s borders, Nihue Rao finds itself confronted by the greatest challenge in its history. The urgency of the situation gives you the opportunity to return the favor and support Nihue Rao and the many people who are dependent upon it for their livelihood.

At this point it seems unlikely the borders will reopen before next year, meaning that Nihue Rao and it’s employees will be without income for that time.

We are raising $92,000 to help Nihue Rao through the remainder of the period. The vast majority of the budget is food and salaries for the workers. With your help, we can ensure that Nihue Rao and its employees are safe and provided for in this challenging time.

There are two ways you can support Nihue Rao:

Tax Deductible Contribution

You can make a tax-deductible contribution via PayPal - Этот адрес электронной почты защищён от спам-ботов. У вас должен быть включен JavaScript для просмотра. by clicking on a button bellow:

Every donation helps. For the price of a dinner out, you can feed the entire Nihue Rao staff a meal.

The minimum suggested donation is $50, but every dollar you donate counts. If just 400 people donate $200 each, we cover nearly our entire budget.

Monthly Donations

You can help even more with a monthly donation. Just click the 'make my donation monthly box' when you get to PayPal. Your monthly donation can provide ongoing security to the Nihue Rao community. Monthly donations will be terminated in six months, or when the fundraising goal is met, whichever comes first.

Prepay For a Diet

You can also prepay for a diet. This is an excellent option because Ricardo has offered a 20% discount for prepaid diets. Moreover, the credit does not expire: you can make use of it at any time.

Diet information and pricing is available here.

To prepay for the diet or if you have any questions about the process, please text our manager Santiago at +51 931 878 587 on WhatsApp.

The Situation at Nihue Rao

Nihue is one of the only centers in Peru that remains operational. Because the center was designed to be insulated from the outside world, there have not been COVID cases at the center itself, but day to operations have been greatly affected.

The staff has been reduced significantly. They are working mostly for food and promise of future payment. Ricardo is dedicated to ensuring that all of the staff will be paid for their services. Food has been very basic for couple of months now, but all get enough to eat.

There is very small handful of long term dieters, who have been there since before the borders were closed in March. Ceremonies have been reduced from four nights a week to two. They continue to march forward in their healing processes.

Though things have been scaled back significantly, the spirit and the medicine remain strong.

The Need

Peru has been hit very hard by COVID. Both the virus itself and the impact it has had on the economy have been devastating. There have been 756,000 cases and 31,000 deaths giving Peru the second highest COVID mortality rate in the world. In April the economy shrank 40%. The Iquitos region which had very poor health infrastructure to begin with was one of the hardest hit.

Nihue Rao is an important part of the local economy, normally employing 50 people, making it by far the largest employer in the local village of Llanchama. Because Peru’s borders have been closed for months, no passajeros, and very little money are coming into Nihue Rao. This has been difficult for Nihue Rao and devastating for the surrounding community. For several months, Ricardo was able to cover expenses from his personal savings, but they are nearing depletion.

At this time contributions from us, the Nihue Rao community, are the only significant possibility of income for Nihue Rao, and the families it supports.

Budget

We have a detailed budget. In reality, most of it translates into food for the Nihue Rao employees.

The budge breaks down to approximately one third each for:

  1. ongoing operating expenses (mostly food)
  2. past wages
  3. wages going forward

Employees spend the vast majority of their income on food mostly for the employees and their families.

Thank You!

Thank you, from the bottom of hearts. This is truly a time of need for Nihue Rao and the families it supports. Your generous donations can ensure their safety and wellbeing.

We wish you strength of heart and inner peace on this beautiful, challenging, and endless journey we are walking together.
